Go Hawks!!
Finally 40 days after I landed in the United States of America, I finally am able to take out some time and willingness to blog. Its been a wonderful experience so far, with both civic and domestic life being starkly different from what I used to experience back home.
So yesterday I want to watch the first Football match of my life. People back home, its pretty different from what we call football (soccer) in India, its American football. American Football is very popular in the U.S and is played at both college and professional level. The match was between Missouri State and The University of Iowa, which I now proudly belong to.
The atmosphere was totally electric. And the fact that I had a seat only 7 rows away from the main action made it even more exciting.
Almost everything about the match was exciting, the marching band of the U of I, the loud roar when the players of the home team walked into the ground from locker room and the constant chanting of "Go Hawks!", simply amazing. And the people from all walks of life and ages seemed to enjoy the weekend, smiling, sipping coke, munching on a hamburger and cheering for their favorite team (which in this case was of course Iowa).
What immensely impressed me was that despite this being a collegiate game and has high intensities, people here do not forget they are all a part of this great nation called the United States. Hence, before every game, the "Star Spangled Banner" which is the national anthem of U.S is played by the band. The patriotic spirit of the Americans is laudable. The Band too was awesome, it was playing the popular game day tunes such as the "Fight Song" and people were humming to it. And then the University mascot- "Herky the Hawk" coming in with the flag and entertaining people with his antics.
Finally the game started, it was a fairly competitive match but the Hawks (U of Iowa) had the clear edge over the Missouri State Bears. Contrary to what I felt in the previous match, American Football is not as slow as it seems, there are proper time limitations and the officials enforce it to ensure a free flowing game. Thanks to my friend, who knows a thing or two about Football, I was able to follow the proceedings pretty closely.
All in all it was a very nice experience. Too bad that they don't allow cameras inside as it is a photographer's paradise, so much vividness, liveliness and sports action. But never mind, the main thing was that I enjoyed.
Stay hooked to incoming posts. There's a lot more stuff to come.
Ciao
